Outline. Rear Traction Motor System

Outline

• The rear traction motor contains a compact, lightweight, high output, high efficiency “Externally Excited Synchronous Motor (EESM)”.

• The inverter (rear) is a device which converts DC power from the Li-ion battery to AC power, and drives the traction motor. Because the AC power frequency and voltage can be varied when the DC power is converted to AC power, it provides control performance with a high degree of freedom.

Operation Description

• DC power from Li-ion battery is converted to AC power with switching by IGBT. When three-phase AC current is passed through the coil of the stator core, rotating magnetic field is generated. Electromagnet of the rotor is pulled by the rotating magnetic field and rotates in synchronizing with the rotating magnetic field, so that torque is generated. The generated torque is almost proportional to the current, and the rotation speed depends on the three-phase AC frequency.

• In order to rotate the rotor optimally, it is necessary to determine the position (angle) of the rotor's electromagnet and the timing when the current flows through the coil. Therefore, using the traction motor resolver and the current sensor, the motor controller constantly detects the rotational position of the rotor and controls the timing when the current flows through the coil.
